The Maritime Union of New Zealand was formed in 2002 by the merger of the NZ Seafarers' Union (deep-sea crew) with the Waterfront Workers' Union (stevedores). Today it represents ~2,500 members across the country's port workforce, coastal shipping crew (Pacifica Shipping, MSC New Zealand feeders), the Cook Strait ferries (Interislander + Bluebridge), and offshore-support-vessel crews serving the Taranaki oil-and-gas industry. MUNZ has been at the centre of several high-profile industrial disputes — the 2011-12 Ports of Auckland lockout, the 2018 Cook Strait ferry safety-manning dispute, and ongoing casualisation battles at the Ports of Tauranga. For seafarers considering a New Zealand-flag berth, MUNZ membership is customary; the union also runs a seafarer welfare-support pathway through Mission to Seafarers Wellington.
