The National Union of Seafarers of India was founded 1950 in Bombay (now Mumbai) and today represents ~35,000 Indian seafarers on foreign-flag vessels — the second-largest seafarer union in Asia after AMOSUP. NUSI's contract portfolio covers most Indian-crewed vessels under IBF Framework Agreements or ITF Uniform TCC-based agreements, with individual employment contracts flowing through DG Shipping-licensed Recruitment and Placement of Seafarers Licence (RPSL) manning agencies. The union operates the NUSI Maritime Academy in Goa, one of India's IMU-approved STCW training centres, and runs a mature welfare fund that provides sickness benefits, death-in-service coverage, and pension supplements to members. For Indian seafarers, NUSI membership is typically embedded in the manning-agency contract at the time of signing on; the union's dues appear as a monthly deduction on the pay slip. NUSI's collaboration with ITF inspectors at Indian ports (particularly Mumbai and Chennai) is one of the more effective wage-recovery pathways for Indian crew facing pay disputes.
