China Seamen's Union · Founded 1921 · Beijing, China · China
The China Seamen's Union is the primary trade-union representative for Chinese seafarers, operating under the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) umbrella that coordinates all Chinese trade unions under the CCP-supervised framework. Founded 1921 in Hong Kong during the same era that gave rise to the ITF's early advocacy, the union has since become a state-supervised body with ~800,000+ members. China's outsized role in world merchant shipping — dominant containership + bulker + tanker fleets + rapidly-growing LNG book — makes the CSU one of the largest single national seafarer bodies globally. Its ITF affiliation is present but qualified given ACFTU/CCP framework; wage-schedule frameworks + welfare programmes are coordinated with COSCO, China Merchants, and other state-linked shipping companies.
