AMOU · Founded 1988 · Sydney, Australia · Australia
The Australian Maritime Officers' Union is the licensed-officer counterpart to the ratings-focused MUA. Formed 1988 by merger of predecessor pilot + officer + engineer unions, the AMOU represents ~2,000 masters, deck officers, engineers, and integrated ratings on Australian-flag tonnage. The union operates in a specialised niche given the small Australian-flag deep-sea fleet: most AMOU members work on either the small residual coastal-trade fleet or on offshore-oil-and-gas industry vessels (AHTS, PSVs, MPSVs, FPSO service) where Australia has a robust industry presence in the North West Shelf + Gulf of Carpentaria + Bass Strait regions. The AMOU coordinates closely with the MUA on Australian coastal-shipping policy advocacy (Coastal Trading Act reform) + with Nautilus International on international officer standards.
