The Australasian Marine Pilots Institute was founded 1963 in Sydney and today represents ~300 Australian and New Zealand licensed marine pilots. Australian pilotage is compulsory in most ports and is administered by state port authorities: the Port Authority of NSW (Sydney, Newcastle, Port Kembla), Port of Melbourne, Flinders Ports (South Australia — Adelaide + Port Lincoln), Pilbara Ports Authority (Port Hedland + Dampier + Ashburton), Port of Fremantle, and the Ports North Queensland corporation (Cairns + Townsville + Weipa + Karumba). AMPI's core work covers AMSA Marine Order 54 consultations (compulsory pilotage areas in the Great Barrier Reef), the ongoing Pilbara ULCV-handling standards (the world's largest iron-ore terminals load 260,000+ DWT VLOCs that require specialised pilotage), and the annual IMPA Safety Campaign contribution on pilot-transfer arrangement standards.
