Nederlands Loodswezen B.V. is the Dutch marine pilotage service, structured as a state-supervised private company fully owned by the pilots themselves — one of the more unusual pilotage-service governance structures in the world. Loodswezen was formed in 1988 by the privatisation of the previously state-run Dutch pilotage service, with the pilots taking full ownership of the operating company under a legal framework that requires state supervision on tariffs and safety standards. Today ~460 Dutch pilots operate across four regions: Rotterdam-Rijnmond (world's-busiest-port pilotage plus the North Sea approach), Amsterdam-IJmond (Amsterdam + IJmuiden Sea Lock approach — the world's largest sea lock at 500m LOA capacity), Scheldemonden (Vlissingen + Terneuzen and the Antwerp approach — Loodswezen pilots handle the Dutch-waters portion of the Scheldt River pilotage in cooperation with Belgian pilots), and Noord (Delfzijl + Eemshaven). Loodswezen also runs pilot boats out of pilot stations at Rotterdam Approach and IJmuiden, and cooperates with UK and Belgian pilotage services on the joint English Channel + North Sea approach pilotage.
