The United Kingdom Maritime Pilots' Association was founded 1884 (originally as the London Pilots' Association) and today represents ~500 UK maritime pilots working under the Pilotage Act 1987 framework. UK pilotage is unusual in Europe in that it is delegated by statute to Competent Harbour Authorities (CHAs) — each major port operates its own pilotage service under a Pilotage Direction issued by the CHA. UKMPA represents pilots across all major CHAs including the Port of London Authority (Thames, from the Sea Reach to Teddington Lock), Port of Milford Haven (Milford Haven pilotage), Aberdeen Harbour, Belfast Harbour, Peel Ports (Liverpool/Manchester/Heysham), and Associated British Ports (Southampton/Hull/Immingham). The association's central negotiating role is on Pilotage Direction reviews, Pilot Exemption Certificate (PEC) qualification standards, and MCA-issued pilotage-related professional guidance. UKMPA also runs the UK contribution to the IMPA Safety Campaign on pilot-transfer arrangements. For visiting seafarers, UK pilots typically board at fixed pilot stations (Sunk, Nab, Sula, Fetlar, Torbay); the UKMPA website lists per-CHA pilotage information.
