UN/LOCODE DEHAM · Germany
Hamburg is Europe's third-busiest port + Germany's largest, on the Elbe river 100 km inland from the North Sea. Standard Schengen shore leave. Deutsche Seemannsmission's Duckdalben international seafarer centre is world-renowned — one of the best-equipped welfare facilities anywhere.
The container terminals (Altenwerder, Burchardkai, Eurogate, Tollerort) are 20-40 minutes from central Hamburg by van. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn connect the wider port area to central Hamburg quickly.
ATMs: everywhere in central Hamburg and shopping streetsMoney changers: airport + Reeperbahn area + central HamburgHospital: Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Bethesda HospitalPrayer rooms: Al-Nour-Moschee (converted church), Turkish community mosques throughout the port districtsHalal food: enormous choice in the port districts (Wilhelmsburg, Veddel, Hamm)Supermarket: Edeka, Rewe, Aldi, Lidl — Sunday closedSIM card: Telekom, Vodafone, O2 at MediaMarkt or airport
Do: visit Duckdalben — one of the world's best seafarer centres. Free wifi, restaurant, shop, chapel, sports, transport. Don't: attempt the Reeperbahn nightlife on a short port stay; it's expensive and can distract from real shore-leave value. Watch for: Hamburg's port is enormous; without van transport you will not reach the centre from most berths.
