Safe for entry (SFE) means the atmosphere is breathable + non-toxic: O2 ≥21% v/v, hydrocarbon <1% LEL, toxic vapours below the threshold limit value (TLV) for the last cargo. Safe for hot work (SFHW) means additionally that no ignition source will cause fire: hydrocarbon <1% LEL AND persistent testing over 30 minutes shows no rise. SFHW is a substantially higher standard — SFE allows a person to enter with breathing gear; SFHW allows welding + grinding without atmosphere risk. ISGOTT tables the specific thresholds.
Dilution alone requires 5-7 tank volumes of fresh air to reduce hydrocarbon from a typical loaded concentration to <1% LEL — slow + fuel-heavy on inert-gas systems. Displacement uses the density difference (heavier vapour pushed out the bottom by lighter inert gas from the top, or vice versa) to shift most of the vapour in ~2 tank volumes. Combined: displacement to ~5% LEL followed by dilution to <1% is optimal — the sweet spot on time + IG consumption.
Manufacturer spec + company SMS + ISGOTT recommend: bump-test (span-check with certified gas) daily when in use; full calibration (zero + span) monthly; laboratory calibration annually. Instrument records must be maintained. A tank certified safe with an out-of-calibration instrument is a documented ISGOTT non-conformance + a leading cause of fatal enclosed-space accidents.
Methane slip is unburnt methane released during gas freeing + vent operations on LNG carriers + LNG-fuelled ships. Methane has ~30x the GHG potency of CO2 on a 100-year horizon.
