Why it matters

A bunker spill is one of the fastest-escalating shipboard incidents — environmental damage, port-state detention, criminal exposure.

Common hazards

• Over-flow during topping off.
• Hose leak / coupling failure.
• Sulphur content non-compliant for the ECA.
• Sampling chain-of-custody disputes.

Practical checklist

• Bunker delivery note received and signed.
• Pre-transfer meeting with barge / shore.
• Drip trays + scuppers plugged.
• Emergency stop tested.
• Continuous level monitoring + sounder.
• MARPOL Sample taken in line with Reg 18.8.1.
