Why it matters
A bunker spill is one of the fastest-escalating shipboard incidents — environmental damage, port-state detention, criminal exposure.
Common hazards
- Over-flow during topping off.
- Hose leak / coupling failure.
- Sulphur content non-compliant for the ECA.
- Sampling chain-of-custody disputes.
Practical checklist
- Bunker delivery note received and signed.
- Pre-transfer meeting with barge / shore.
- Drip trays + scuppers plugged.
- Emergency stop tested.
- Continuous level monitoring + sounder.
- MARPOL Sample taken in line with Reg 18.8.1.
