Gangway watch
ISPS, visitors, packages, port-state inspectors, lifebuoy + radio readiness.
Why it matters
The gangway is the vessel's front door. Bad gangway practice = stowaways, unauthorised access, slip / fall casualties, and ISPS findings.
Common hazards
- Unaccompanied visitors below.
- Gangway angle / tide change causing slip.
- Stowaways during night hours.
- Crew falls overboard from gangway.
Practical checklist
- Lifebuoy, light, line at the gangway.
- Radio + ship-security station hot-line.
- Visitor log — ID checked, host on board, departure time.
- Gangway net + safety lighting in place.
