Kenya is an emerging East African seafarer-supplying nation, supported by the country's significant port (Mombasa, the largest in East Africa) and government Blue Economy initiatives. Kenya ratified MLC 2006 in 2014. The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) administers STCW certification under the Merchant Shipping Act 2009 and the Kenya Shipping Notice 02/2014 series. Bandari Maritime Academy (formerly Bandari College, restructured into an Academy in 2021) is the flagship training institution.
The dominant officer-track route is through Bandari Maritime Academy in Mombasa, offering Bachelor of Science programmes in Marine Engineering and Nautical Science with cadetships arranged through international operators. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Technical University of Mombasa also offer related programmes. After graduation, KMA issues the STCW CoC.
Kenyan seafarers serve heavily on regional shipping (Kenya Ports Authority operates harbour services), East African feeder lines, and on international fleets through manning agents. Cruise lines actively recruit Kenyan seafarers (notably for hotel and engineering departments). The Blue Economy strategy has expanded local opportunities; Kenya National Shipping Line (KNSL) operates a small national-flag fleet.
Most Kenyan seafarers depart Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) Nairobi or Moi International (MBA) Mombasa. Carry the seaman's book, original SEA, manning-agent letter of guarantee, and required transit/crew visa for the joining port. Kenyan passport holders need formal visas for most maritime hub ports (Schengen C, US C-1/D, etc.) — process via the destination country embassy in Nairobi.
Contact the Dock Workers Union or ITF Inspectorate at the next port, ISWAN SeafarerHelp 24/7, and KMA's seafarer welfare unit for flag-state complaints. For specific cases see abandonment, unpaid wages, and contract disputes.
