Overview
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore is the marine arm of the French testing-and-certification conglomerate, founded in Antwerp in 1828 and headquartered today in Neuilly-sur-Seine. It classes around 11,500 vessels representing 145 million GT and is the recognised organisation for some 140 flag administrations — the widest delegation network of any society. BV is particularly strong in passenger and ro-pax tonnage, French naval auxiliaries, and the West-African offshore fleet. It is an IACS member and runs the BV Solus and BV Veristar software stacks for class records and ship-management.

Why it matters to seafarers
BV is the default classer if you sail under the French flag or for any operator with a Mediterranean or West-African footprint. Their Veristar Fleet portal exposes vessel status and survey planning; the BV deficiency-coding system maps cleanly onto Paris-MoU detention codes, so the same wording often appears in both class reports and PSC reports.
