Overview
Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, marketed as ClassNK, is Japan's national classification society, founded in 1899 and headquartered in Tokyo. It classes roughly 9,000 vessels totalling 280 million GT — close to a quarter of the world fleet — and is the dominant classer of Japanese-owned and Japanese-built bulk carriers, very large ore carriers, and PCTCs (pure car/truck carriers). ClassNK is an IACS founding member, operates a major decarbonisation-advisory practice (NK-SHIPS), and is increasingly active in autonomous-vessel and ammonia-fuel rule-development.

Why it matters to seafarers
ClassNK-classed vessels make up much of the deep-sea bulk-carrier fleet, so seafarers working for Japanese owners (NYK, MOL, K-Line and their charterers) will encounter ClassNK surveyors regularly. ClassNK's NK-PASS portal carries the class status record and survey planning, and ClassNK forms are the de-facto standard for Japan-flag and Panama-flag (via the Japanese-owned PI fleet) statutory paperwork.
