Overview
Korean Register, founded in 1960 and headquartered in Busan, is South Korea's national classification society. It classes around 3,500 vessels totalling 80 million GT, with strength in container ships built at Korean yards (HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, Hanwha Ocean), LNG carriers, and LPG carriers. KR became an IACS member in 1988 and operates a strong decarbonisation and alternative-fuel programme alongside its conventional class work.

Why it matters to seafarers
If you join a recently-built container ship or LNG carrier delivered from a Korean yard, expect a KR class certificate (sometimes alongside a second society for dual-class). KR surveyors are well-distributed across Asian ports and KR's e-Service portal hosts the class status record.
