A "ship operator" is the entity that has commercial control of a vessel — booking cargo, paying bunkers and port dues, handling the day-to-day commercial decisions — and is named on the AIS as the operator. A "ship manager" (or technical manager) is the entity contracted to provide technical management: maintenance, manning, compliance, dry-docking. The same company often does both. This index covers 373 companies that operate or manage ships, separately from manning agencies, which only supply crew.
