The Bangladesh-flagged Handysize bulk carrier Abdullah (KSRM Group, Chittagong) was hijacked by Somali pirates approximately 550 nautical miles east of Mogadishu on 12 March 2024. The 23-strong crew (all Bangladeshi) were held aboard for over a month while the vessel was diverted to the Somali coast. She was released on 13 April 2024 after a reported multi-million dollar ransom payment. The hijack was one of the most significant successful Somali piracy events since 2012 + directly attributed to the shift of Combined Task Force 151 naval assets to the Red Sea Houthi campaign, temporarily reducing anti-piracy patrol density in the Somali Basin. The case prompted the return of some CTF-151 vessels to Somali patrol duty and confirmed the ongoing latent Somali piracy capability.
MV Abdullah is the modern case for Somali piracy resurgence + the fragility of the multinational naval presence that had suppressed the phenomenon 2013-2023. Every bulker officer transiting the western Indian Ocean now studies the case as a reminder that armed pirate risk is not a solved problem.
