The Safety Management Certificate (SMC) is the ISM Code certificate issued to an individual ship, following a ship-side audit, to evidence that the ship is operated in accordance with the company's approved Safety Management System. It is valid for five years, subject to at least one intermediate audit and any additional audits, and together with the company's Document of Compliance (DOC) it forms the ship's ISM compliance evidence carried on board. An expired, invalid or missing SMC is a port-state-control detainable deficiency.
