Nigerian Navy Operation Delta Sanity + Deep Blue Project + regional Maritime Domain Awareness collaboration under the Yaoundé Code of Conduct + the Bab-el-Mandeb-driven shift of merchant traffic away from Africa around Cape of Good Hope have collectively suppressed the phenomenon. Remaining incidents primarily target fishing vessels + offshore-supply tenders in Nigerian EEZ + Cameroon waters. Kidnap-for-ransom pattern of 2018-2020 (Master/Chief Officer/Chief Engineer held ashore for weeks) has essentially disappeared in 2024.
