Nigerian pirates boarded the Marshall Islands-flagged product tanker Achilleas off Bonny Island, Nigeria. Three Greek officers (Master, Chief Officer, Chief Engineer) were kidnapped and taken ashore into the Niger Delta swamps. The remaining 22 crew were released with the vessel; the 3 senior officers were held for 44 days before release upon reported ransom payment. The case exemplifies the Nigerian kidnap-for-ransom pattern that dominated Gulf of Guinea attacks 2014-2020: pirates board briefly, take senior officers (typically Master + Chief Officer + Chief Engineer), release the vessel + junior crew, and hold the officers ashore.
