China rules vary by port. Most foreign crew need either a C-visa (crew, issued in advance) OR an in-port shore-leave permit issued at the master's / agent's discretion. Some northern ports stricter than southern. Always carry passport + Discharge Book + Joining/Leaving Letter + a copy of the crew list. Reference: visaforchina.cn.

Nearest major airport: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA (~15 km)). Vessel agent normally arranges taxi or seafarer-centre shuttle to/from the airport at sign-on / sign-off. Confirm transport with the agent at least 24 hours before disembarkation.
Major operators: China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom. Tourist SIM requires passport registration. Note: most western apps (WhatsApp, Google, Facebook) are blocked without a VPN; bring WeChat installed before arrival.
