Paris/Tokyo MoU — common deficiencies and how to prepare.
Why it matters
A PSC detention can cost a vessel days alongside, cost the owner large sums, and cost crew their leave. Preparation is the cheapest investment on the ship.
Common hazards
- Out-of-date publications + certificates.
- Defective fire-fighting / lifesaving equipment.
- Hours-of-rest records that don't match reality.
- Garbage / Oil Record Book inconsistencies.
Practical checklist
- Certificates folder up to date and accessible.
- Drills schedule current.
- Crew familiarisation records signed.
- MLC complaint procedure visible.
- Crew briefed not to volunteer information beyond the question.
