Overview
Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding at Tamano and Chiba builds VLCCs, LPG carriers, and ro-pax tonnage. Part of Mitsui E&S Holdings — itself descended from the Mitsui zaibatsu shipbuilding business that started in 1917. In 2022 Mitsui E&S agreed to transfer its commercial-shipbuilding operations to Yangzijiang's group while retaining engineering capability for offshore and specialised projects.

Why it matters to seafarers
Older Mitsui-built VLCCs are still in service across the Japanese-managed tanker pool. The yard's engineering legacy (Mitsui-MAN-ES engine licence, Mitsui WIN-GD) lives on in the in-service fleet.
