Oshima Shipbuilding on Oshima island in Nagasaki Prefecture is a pure-play bulk-carrier specialist and one of the top three global bulker builders by output. Founded in 1973 and family-controlled by the Hirai family, the yard builds Handysize, Handymax, Ultramax, and Kamsarmax bulkers almost exclusively for Japanese and international owner-operators. Oshima maintains one of the shipbuilding industry's most efficient cost structures despite operating in high-wage Japan.
