Overview
China Classification Society was founded in 1956 in Beijing and is the dominant classer of the Chinese-built and Chinese-owned fleet — bulk carriers, container ships, tankers, and an expanding offshore portfolio. CCS classes around 9,000 vessels totalling 250 million GT (figures grow each year with new-build deliveries from Yangzijiang, Hudong-Zhonghua, and other Chinese yards). It joined IACS in 1988 and is the recognised organisation for the Chinese flag and several others including Panama for Chinese-owned tonnage.

Why it matters to seafarers
If you sail on Chinese-flag tonnage or any vessel delivered from a Chinese yard in the last decade, expect CCS class. CCS's e-Class portal hosts certificates and survey planning; English documentation is increasingly available, but Chinese-language surveys still occur in Yangtze-River and coastal-fleet trades.
