Overview
Japan P&I Club, founded in 1950 in Tokyo, is the only Japan-headquartered International Group P&I member. It covers about 100 million GT of mostly Japanese-owned tonnage — NYK, MOL, K-Line, and their charter pools — as well as a growing book of South-East-Asian operators. The club is conservatively underwritten, with a strong reserve position and a domestic claims-handling network in Japan plus offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, London, and Houston.

Why it matters to seafarers
Seafarers on Japanese-owned bulk, container, or PCTC tonnage will usually find Japan P&I as the cover, with English-language claim handling routed through the Singapore or Hong Kong office for Asian calls. The club publishes a useful loss-prevention bulletin in English and Japanese that is often used in onboard safety meetings.
