hijack · 2010-03-29 · Arabian Sea (off somalia)
Somali pirates boarded the Panama-flagged general cargo vessel Iceberg 1 approximately 10 nautical miles off Aden. The 24 crew (Yemeni, Ghanaian, Sudanese, Pakistani, Indian, Filipino) were held for nearly 3 years — the longest-held Somali hijack case on record. Owner-abandonment complicated ransom negotiations; the crew endured extended captivity. The vessel and remaining crew were freed on 23 December 2012 following a Puntland Maritime Police Force operation. The case exposed the exposure of low-value tonnage to opportunistic hijack + the compounding effect of shipowner abandonment on hostage recovery.
