hijack · 2024-03-12 · Arabian Sea (off somalia)
Somali pirates boarded and hijacked the Bangladesh-flagged bulk carrier Abdullah loaded with coal, taking the 23 Bangladeshi crew hostage. The vessel was diverted to the Somali coast and held for over a month while ransom negotiations proceeded. The vessel and crew were released on 13 April 2024 after a reported multi-million-dollar ransom payment. The hijack represented one of the most significant successful Somali piracy events since 2012 and prompted renewed calls for CTF-151 to restore Gulf of Aden patrol density.
