attempted hijack · 2024-01-04 · Arabian Sea (off somalia)
Somali pirates boarded the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Lila Norfolk approximately 460 nautical miles east of Somalia. The 21 crew — mostly Indian nationals — retreated to the citadel and activated the ship's SSAS. INS Chennai (Indian Navy) responded rapidly. On arrival the Indian Navy conducted a boarding operation; the pirates had already departed. All crew were extracted safely. The incident marked a resurgence of Somali piracy activity coinciding with the diversion of Combined Task Force 151 assets to the Red Sea Houthi campaign.
