missile strike · 2024-08-21 · Red Sea (central red sea)
The Greek-flag Suezmax crude tanker Sounion was struck by Houthi projectiles and boarded by small craft. Fires broke out in multiple cargo tanks. The 25 crew were evacuated by the French frigate FS Provence to Djibouti. The vessel drifted burning for over a month before EU NAVFOR ASPIDES coordinated an inspection and salvage. The vessel carried ~1 million barrels of crude — a potential catastrophic oil-spill loss which was ultimately averted by successful salvage and towing to safe waters in September 2024.
