MSC Napoli

MSC Napoli was a 1991-built UK-flagged container ship that suffered a catastrophic hull breach in the English Channel on 18 January 2007 during severe weather off the Lizard Peninsula. Slamming loads caused engine-room flooding; her 26 crew abandoned to lifeboats and were rescued by RAF helicopter. The Salvage Association deliberately beached the crippled vessel in Lyme Bay to prevent an environmental disaster in the Channel shipping lanes. She broke up over the following months and was cut in half for scrapping — one of the largest container-ship losses in UK waters and a case study in slamming-induced structural failure.

Crew perspective

MSC Napoli's abandonment is drilled into modern deck-officer training: the SOLAS lifeboat descent in Force 8 seas succeeded because crew had rehearsed the drill under adverse conditions. The subsequent MAIB investigation drove IACS updates on container-ship whipping-load calculation. Naval architects still cite Napoli when arguing for revised bending-moment allowances on post-Panamax hulls.
